Batch Cooking

Batch Cooking

Leaves You Time for Basking in The Sun

Whether you are a working mom or dad, or a stay at home individual ,batch cooking will save you time and lots of money. So many people travel back and forth to work, run errands, or stop at daycare, and then finally they are at home and the real work begins.

It is so easy to just pick food up on the way home but look what that is doing to your pocket book and what you are putting into your bodies. I’ve been there and done that. After all ,once we are home there is laundry, or cleaning and possibly helping with homework. Before you know it, it’s time for baths and bedtime.

I have been doing batch cooking for a while now and it is such a relief. At first I started by just cooking large quantities of items like pinto beans, or chili and what we didn’t eat went in the freezer to be pulled out on a later date.

Soon after I realized if I were cooking ground beef for items like hamburger helper, spaghetti and other casseroles that I could cook it all at the same time. I started frying up about 5 to to ten pounds of ground beef at a time and freezing it in 1 pound servings. It is easy to just take it out of the freezer and pop it into the microwave to defrost in quick time. You are already cooking the meat for your one meal so this way it frees up your time for the next time you cook a casserole. You are saving valuable time and by buying the meat in bulk you save on the price per pound.

The same principle goes for other meats. I like to cook chicken legs by putting just enough olive oil to cover the bottom of the skillet and letting them slowly pan fry. Now when I cook them I get out the large electric skillet and cook a double batch. The extra legs are put in the freezer and taste just as good when you take them out.

One of my favorite things to do is on Saturday morning. I try and cook all the main meat courses for the entire week and store them in the refrigerator. It usually takes me about 4 hours but as things are cooking I can still do laundry and other small chores.

Whom ever does the cooking in your house will love this technique. Once home from work all you do is heat up the meat and cook some vegetables. Nothing could be easier and you have food that is better for you than what you would pick up for fast food .

I read an article recently off a website about bank rates that just blew me away. This particular website had an advise section and it told the story of a woman who cooked once a month. Deborah Taylor-Hough reports that in the last five years she has saved over $24,000.00 on her grocery bill by spending an entire day cooking for the month. Here is the link to the website so you can read it for yourself. Once you get to the site, just type in Deborah Taylor-Hough in the search box and it will take you to the article. http://www.bankrate.com

The most I have cooked for is a week at a time, but after reading this woman’s story I can’t wait to cook for the entire month. Whatever will I do with all that free time the rest of the month? Maybe I’ll go fishing.

Cris, thanks for your question. As far as batch cooking goes, my mother taught me about it. She grew up very poor and once she married and had children she had to learn how to save time and money. However there are websites such as the one i mentioned in the article that teach about it too. Do a search on “cooking in quantity” and see what other information you can come up with.

This is a great idea! It would also be a good idea if you buy the freezer bags with the labels on them and write what the item is and the date you put it in the freezer (because sometimes it is kind of difficult to identify a food after it has been frozen because of all the frost on it!)
