There Is Help For High Medical Bills
Getting sick is not only hard on the body and loved ones but is hard on the pocket book. In 2003 my mom was in an automobile accident and had lots of medical bills. Although she was on medicare at the time they were waiting to pay on most of the bills because the accident was not my mothers fault They wanted the other insurance company to pay. As you can imagine the hospitals and doctors wanted payment right away and starting calling my mother on the phone.
Before moving out West to take care of my mom I worked as an insurance adjuster for a major corporation. One thing I had learned durng those years is how to negotiate with attorneys for automobile settlements. I started thinking why not negotiate on the medical bills. I knew that the hospital would be glad to get at least what Medicare would have paid so I went from that point.
I knew that mother would be getting a settlement from the other insurance company so I called the hospital business office and made an offer. The only bill we had left was one for $8000.00. I offered $4500.00 as full and final payment and if they would agree to that I would pay the bill right away. They had already waited nine months on medicare and I knew they wanted this bill off the books.
The woman in the business office said she would go to management and get back with me in a couple of days. The very next day she called and they accepted my offer.
Other Tips For Saving On Medical Bills
1. Ask for an itemized copy of your hospital bills. Most of them have errors on them.
2. If you know in advance you are going to be hospitalized, set up a payment plan.
3. When negotiating, don’t be afraid to make a counter offer if they don’t accept your first.
4. You can go to the business office and ask ahead of time to pay the same low rates that an insurance company would pay.
If you don’t have cash up front to offer the hospital or doctor, you can go ahead and negotiate a price when them and then take out a loan to pay them off. Even with the interest you pay on the loan, you will still be saving thousands on a large bill.
A story in the New York Times once stated that doctors, hospitals and labs are used to negotiating. Some labs will set up payment plans also.
Maybe you won’t ever need to use this technique for yourself, but please pass it on to your friends and love ones. There is no need for us to pay more than we have too.

Great post and great job negotiating. I have no doubt your background as an adjuster helped your negotiation. Many people do not have the time or confidence to negotiate with their medical provider. INSNET, LLC is a patient advocacy service which helps people save money on their medical bills. Their service is risk free, they keep a percentage of the amount they save on your bill, with no fee if there is no savings. Any medical bill over $200 is eligible to be sent for professional bill review and negotiation. INSNET was founded by Insurance Negotiating Service, which has preformed the same negotiation service for insurance companies since 1985 and saved their clients millions.
