Cheaper Groceries
Would You Like Cheaper Groceries?
I think that is a question almost everyone would answer yes! I know that cheaper groceries has really been on my mind for about a year now. Already I had started to cook more from scratch and kept cooking in bulk like I always do, but it seemed hard to keep up with changing prices. So, about 6 weeks ago, I started thinking this is just silly, there has to be a way to save even more. So I devised a new plan for my weekly shopping trip.
In order to save fuel I only drive to town once a week. I live and work from my home out in the country, which is about 20 miles from Walmart where I like to buy groceries. But in order to get cheaper groceries I had to start watching the store ads, and I started going to Sams Wholesale Club every couple of weeks. Normally I don’t think Sams Club is the best place to get cheaper groceries, but I found ways to save there as well.
Getting Cheaper Groceries At Sams Club
The way I found to save money at Sams is in the meat department. Buying groceries this way is going to cost you more than you normally spend the first month, but after that, you will see a big savings. I buy huge pieces of meat, like the 10 pound package of hamburger, or family size package of pork chops. One thing I noticed about their hamburger meat is that it is 90% lean with only 10% fat, and the good news is that it’s cheaper per pound than at Walmart. In fact it was almost $1 per pound less!
Meat is about the only thing I buy at Sams except toilet paper. I spend around $18 for a huge container of POMS toilet paper and it last for months. It is huge double size, two-ply rolls that will last you longer than any roll you find at the grocery store.
Getting Cheaper Groceries At The Supermarket
Sams Club does not carry ham or turkey, or least not a great variety of them, unless it is close to a holiday. If you cook ham and turkey during the year you will save a tremendous amount of money on food. Again, it cost more for the initial purchase, but once they are sliced up and put in the freezer in family size servings, you will have really cheap and delicious meals waiting for you all the time.
I don’t know about you, but I am sick and tired of everything costing so much. Since I started buying a turkey one week, ham the next week, brisket the next week, my grocery bill has finally started to go down. And we are eating better than ever! I can remember a couple of years ago when brisket was around 99 cents a pound, yet we only bought them when having a party or cookout. Now they are around $2 per pound and I was outraged! But…then I thought about it. Brisket versus Hamburger. Hamburger is one of the most expensive meats per pound anymore, unless you get the kind that has so much fat in it you get very little meat!
So the next time you think you want cheaper groceries you need to decide it may be time for brisket instead of hamburger!
